Monsignor James Patrick Shea is the sixth president of the University of Mary, inaugurated in 2009 at age 34 as the youngest college or university president in the United States. A native of Hazelton, North Dakota, he earned degrees in philosophy from the Catholic University of America and studied theology in Rome at the Gregorian and Lateran universities. His education also includes studies at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Chicago, and Harvard University. A priest of the Diocese of Bismarck, Monsignor Shea has served in parish ministry, education, and chaplaincy both in the U.S. and abroad, including work with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. He serves on several national and regional boards and is deeply committed to the education and formation of young people.
