It’s one of America’s great miscarriages of justice: a Supreme Court ruling so disturbing, ignorant and cruel it bogles the mind. Buck v. Bell allowed the sterilization of a “feebleminded” young woman and championed the mass eugenic sterilization of so-called “undesirables.” It was signed by the revered Chief Justice and former president Taft and written by legendary Justice Oliver Wendell Homes, who infamously declared that “three generations of imbeciles are enough.” How did a ruling like this ever come to be?
