Is Serving the Poor a Religious Act?

Earlier this year, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that Catholic Charities of Wisconsin’s service to local needy was not “typical” religious activity, as the group serves Catholics and non-Catholics alike, meaning that Catholic Charities could not be granted a religious tax exemption. The Supreme Court has agreed to take the case, and Andrea Picciotti-Bayer has the details.

Dr. John Bergsma is Vice President for Biblical Theology and Mission Effectiveness at the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology and Professor of Theology at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he has taught Scripture since 2004. He is the author of many books, most recently Jesus and the Jubilee: The Biblical Roots of the Year of God’s Favor.
