We thank you, O Lord: A Thanksgiving Day Grace

The impulse to thank God is never stronger than on this Thanksgiving Day. While we may be able to list our favorite foods for this US holiday celebration, we don’t always have the words to express our gratitude to God.

Here Aleteia offers the text of a Thanksgiving Day Grace composed by our own Fr. Peter Cameron, O.P. It is formatted for use by three leaders and a group (a family or other gathering), but may be adapted to your situation and may also be prayed on one’s own. Responses appear in bold-face type. If prayed before the Thanksgiving meal, gather everyone at the table to pray a few minutes before the meal is ready to serve.

Opening Prayer

Leader 1:

Let us pray. Most merciful Father, your gifts of love are countless and your goodness infinite. On this Thanksgiving Day we come before you with gratitude for your kindness: open our hearts to concern for others so that we may share your gifts of loving service with all your people. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

All: Amen.
