Description: What responsibility does Social Media bear in promoting the truth? The Catholic Catechism notes that in our modern society, the communications media plays a major role in societal information, cultural promotion and formation. Since society has a right to information that is based on truth, justice, freedom and solidarity, every segment of the communications culture bears a heavy responsibility for the common good. Media content within the bounds of justice and charity must be true and complete and communicated honestly and properly. The Catechism cautions us to be “vigilant” rather than “passive” consumers of information in order to resist unwholesome influences. Journalists are urged to respect the facts, while still observing charity by not stooping to defamation of individuals.
