Description: Why is prayer a battle? Prayer is both a gift of grace and a determined response on our part, the Catholic Catechism tells us.” It takes effort. Who is the battle against? Against ourselves and against the devil who does all he can to turn us away from prayer and God and union with God. If we do not live habitually according to the Spirit of Christ, we cannot pray habitually in his name. “We pray as we live,” says the Catechism, “and we live as we pray.” One of the most universal difficulties in prayer is distraction. The simple and most effective answer to distraction is to turn back to our heart for distraction reveals to what we are attached. This humble awareness can prompt us to offer our hearts to the Lord for purification. This is Peggy Stanton and the Catechism.
