Description: What is Jesus Christ's relationship to the church He founded? According to the Catholic Catechism, whether the head or the members of the church speak, it is Christ who speaks in His role as the head and in His role as the body. As head, Christ calls Himself the bridegroom; as body, He calls Himself the bride. In the Gospel, Jesus says, "So they are no longer two, but one flesh". This great mystery of conjugal union, where two different persons become one, is applied to Christ and the Church. The catechism says further, the Church is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Saint Augustine said, what the soul is to the human body, the Holy Spirit is to the body of Christ, which is the church. The Holy Spirit makes the church the temple of the living God.
