Description: How does Freedom affect our actions? According to the Catholic catechism, Freedom makes us responsible for every act that we have directly willed. Despite her efforts to place all the blame on the serpent, Eve was directly responsible for initiating and committing original sin. She knew God had forbidden her to eat from the tree of good and evil, yet she did it anyway. Cain deliberately killed his brother Abel. David deliberately committed both adultery and murder. None of the three were ignorant of the gravity of their acts, and there were no mitigating circumstances that diminished their responsibility. However, David was particularly remorseful, when confronted with his guilt. The Catechism tells us that the right to the exercise of freedom, especially in moral and religious matters is an inalienable requirement for the dignity of the human person.
