+  Georgia Executes Kelly Gissendaner, Despite Plea from Pope Francis

  • Description: Kelly Gissendaner was executed in Georgia last night. She was convicted of murder in 1997 for convincing her lover to kill her husband. The actual killer, Greg Owen, testified against her during the trial and received a life sentence as part of a plea deal. A representative for Pope Francis sent a letter to the parole board asking that her life be spared. Gissendaner’s children also pleaded for her life. Statements from inmates, prison guards and other people who knew Gissendaner depict her as a textbook example of someone who has been rehabilitated. Deacon Richard Tolcher, Coordinator of the Archdiocese of Atlanta’s prison ministry, will tell us about it.
