Kresta in the Afternoon – October 29, 2007 – Hour 2

  • Description:

First Topic – “Survival of world” at stake

Last week 138 Muslim leaders sent an open letter to the Pope and other Christian leaders, calling on Christians to “make peace” with Muslims and focus on the similarities between their religions. The Vatican has responded. We analyze the letter and the Christian response with Sandra Keating, a member of the Vatican Commission on Interreligious Dialogue with Muslims.

Second Topic – Modernism: Then and Now

It was 100 years ago that the Vatican’s Holy Office, predecessor of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, condemned 65 propositions that it had found contrary to Catholic orthodoxy. Pope Pius X followed up two months later with an encyclical in which he linked the condemned propositions to a heresy called Modernism, and went on to identify its philosophical and theological roots. We look at Modernism – then and now – with Fr. Marvin O’Connell, author of Critics on Trial: An Introduction to the Catholic Modernist Crisis.
