Kresta in the Afternoon – March 9, 2009 – Hour 1

  • Description:

First Topic – The Rise & Fall of the Sexual Constitution of Western Civilization

In the latest edition of the journal Touchstone, Allan Carlson, Founder and President of the Howard Center for Family, Religion & Society, published an article entitled “Meaningful Intercourse: The Rise and Fall of the Sexual Constitution of the West.” In it he draws the parallel between modern notions of sexuality and those of ancient Gnosticism. He points out the demise of our civilization is coming through the acceptance of contraception and the legitimating of illegitimacy. We discuss it.

Second Topic – Obama lifts ban on embryonic stem cell research

President Barack Obama has ended Bush-era limits on using federal dollars for embryonic stem cell research. Obama signed an executive today, with scientists at his side. He said "medical miracles do not happen simply by accident." Former President George W. Bush had limited taxpayer money for embryonic stem cell research to a small number of stem cell lines that were created before Aug. 9, 2001. Fr. Tad Pacholczyk is with us.

Third Topic – GA legislation addresses “Octomom” IVF abuses

The intense “Octomom” news coverage has highlighted the moral and social problems inherent in the powerful and unregulated IVF industry. Bioethics Defense Fund attorneys Nikolas Nikas and Dorinda Bordlee have drafted “The Ethical Treatment of Human Embryos Act” that was heard in a Georgia Senate committee late last week. Consultation and analysis was provided by the National Catholic Bioethics Center. Dorinda is with us to discuss the necessity of this legislation.
