Kresta in the Afternoon – March 5, 2008 – Hour 2

  • Description:

First Topic – Pius XII – Petition for Beatification delivered to Pope

This weekend we celebrated the birthday of Pope Pius XII, which also happens to be the day he was elected to the papacy. Also, a Petition to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI for the Beatification of Pope Pius XII, which garnered approximately 15,000 signatures in three months, has been submitted for His Holiness’ consideration. We look at the controversy surrounding Pius XII and his cause for canonization with Pius XII expert Ron Rychlak.

Second Topic – Martin Sheen to be honored at Notre Dame

Martin Sheen will be honored by the University of Notre Dame with its Laetare Medal for his humanitarian work. Since 1883, the Laetare Medal has been awarded annually to a Catholic "whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity." ND President Fr. John Jenkins said "He has used that celebrity to draw the attention of his fellow citizens to issues that cry out for redress, such as the plight of immigrant workers and homeless people, the waging of unjust war, the killing of the unborn and capital punishment.” The killing of the unborn? You’ll be surprised to hear just what Sheen has said about abortion that qualifies him to receive this honor.
