Kresta in the Afternoon – June 23, 2008 – Hour 1

  • Description:

First Topic – The “Fairness Doctrine” and the Broadcasters Freedom Act

“Conservative talk radio -- one of the most potent forces in US politics -- could be neutered by a return of the “Fairness Doctrine” unless Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) is able to get 28 more signatures on his “discharge petition” to force a House floor vote.” That seems to be the gist of what many have been hearing about the impending threat to free speech on the airwaves. We get to the bottom of this story and ask what makes us think the Fairness Doctrine is on its way back?

Second Topic – Disastrous Homeschooling Ruling Revisited

Parents and religious groups favoring homeschooling had Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and California's schools chief on their side today when a state appeals court met to reconsider its ruling that required in-home instructors to have teaching credentials. The state's largest teachers union, however, is arguing that the judges did the right thing when they declared that state law requires parents to send their children to full-time public or private schools or have them taught by credentialed tutors at home. We discuss the case with an attorney who was in the courtroom this morning.

Third Topic – Greater Than You Think

The recent runaway bestsellers God Is Not Great and The God Delusion have left Christians feeling defensive but not necessarily equipped to refute the accusations of nonbelievers. The bestsellers have also provoked those who are on the fence about whether God exists, and if so, whether He's good. Father Thomas Williams provides accessible but intellectually rich answers for both groups. For believers and those searching for something to believe in, Fr. Williams helps us build our own faith and ignite others’.
