He and his wife were appointed to the Pontifical Council for the Family by Pope Benedict XCI in 2009. He is also serving as a theological advisor to the USCCB Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family and Youth. In 2015 he was appointed by Pope Francis to serve as an expert at the Synod of Bishops on the Family.
