Kresta in the Afternoon – January 30, 2008 – Hour 1

  • Description:

First Topic – God in the Stadium: Sports and Religion in America

This Sunday evening millions of Americans will be watching Super Bowl XLII, pitting the New England Patriots against the New York Giants. Robert Higgs joins us to look at sports and religion in America. After a lifetime of observation and concern about the increasingly pervasive influence of sport on American culture, Higgs takes a personal and passionate look at sports and religion in the public values and private rituals of American life.

Second Topic – Again: Illegal Immigrant takes refuge at Chicago Church

Leaders of a Chicago storefront church where an illegal immigrant from Mexico took sanctuary for a year before being deported say they plan to house another immigration activist who is set on defying a deportation order. Al has a lot to say about sanctuary, the law, and political posturing on immigration.

Third Topic – Dietrich Von Hildebrand Legacy Project

It was just this weekend that we commemorated the 31st anniversary of the death of Dietrich von Hildebrand, the German philosopher and theologian who was called (informally) by Pope Pius XII "the 20th Century Doctor of the Church." He was also known to be a great favorite of Pope John Paul the Great, and Pope Benedict XVI who, as the young Father Joseph Ratzinger, ministered to von Hildebrand's parish. John Henry Crosby is the founder of the Dietrich von Hildebrand Legacy Project. He joins us.
