The television series “24” is back on the air and lead character Jack Bauer is on Capitol Hill answering questions about his history of using torture to gain information from terrorists as a member of the fictional “Counter-Terrorism Unit.” Many have argued that in the course of 24’s run on FOX, the show has made torture popular. Dr. Homer Drae Venters of New York University says opinion polls suggest that American acceptance of torture is increasing — to 44 per cent in 2008 from 36 per cent in 2006 . In the fog of war, terror and politics, people have become accustomed to the idea of torture, according to the poll. We discuss the role of force, both lethal and non-lethal, in Catholic Social Teaching and the history of Catholic thinking on this topic.
