Kresta in the Afternoon – January 10, 2008 – Hour 1

  • Description:

First Topic – The Church and Torture

Torture and advanced interrogation methods continue to be an issue in Congress and on the Presidential campaign trail, especially as former POW and staunch waterboarding opponent John McCain stages a comeback. Recently, former CIA interrogator John Kiriakou said that suspected al Qaeda lieutenant Abu Zubaida agreed to cooperate after being subjected to the simulated drowning technique for less than a minute by CIA officials in 2002. Is waterboarding torture? What constitutes torture? What does the Church have to say? We find out from Fr. Brian Harrison.

Second Topic – U.S. – Vatican Relations: From the Inside

It was only 24 years ago today that the US established diplomatic relations with the Holy See. We talk with former US ambassador to the Vatican Ray Flynn about the significance of this relationship and why it was so dramatically opposed by many groups, including the media, at the time.
