Kresta in the Afternoon – February 16, 2009 – Hour 2

  • Description:

First Topic – The Genesis Initiative: Addressing the Cultural Need

A group of Catholics is responding to Pope Benedict’s call to impact the culture through media by launching The Genesis Initiative, an effort to raise money through tax-deductible donations to fund Catholic-themed movie productions for the big screen. Dick Lyles, the founding Chairman and CEO, says that in recent years Catholics and Catholic themes have been slowly squeezed out of mainstream movie making. As a result, we’re also being squeezed out of the culture. The mission is to enhance understanding about the positive impact of Catholic values, teachings, and historical figures on the broader culture through educational and training initiatives and by supporting the development and production of relevant movie and television projects. We discuss it with Dick.

Second Topic – The Greatest – and Worst – of the 43 U.S. Presidents

Dr. Paul Kengor was among 65 presidential scholars surveyed by C-SPAN for its Presidents’ Day 2009 ranking of American presidents. Kengor says that the fairness exemplified in this survey is “badly needed,” given that “most of these rankings of presidents by academics are merely rankings of the liberal bias of academic historians and political scientists—and certainly not representative of America.” And what were the results? Paul is here on this President’s Day to tell us - and we want to hear from you. Who were the greatest and worst U.S. presidents of all time?
