+  Social Science Apologetics: Children of Lesbian Parents More Likely to Identify as Gay or Bisexual

  • Description: The idea that gay parents are more likely to have gay children has long been thought to be a myth among sexual orientation researchers. For example, a review of the literature published in 1999 emphatically stated that “the incidence of homosexuality is no higher if one is raised by a gay or lesbian parent, than if one is raised by a heterosexual parent.” However, recent research challenges this conclusion. Greg Popcak has more.

+  The Real Presence: Knowing What We Are Doing

  • Description: The recent Pew Research Center study about U.S. Catholics demonstrated that we have much work to do to ensure that priests and the faithful have this awareness and appreciation. Only 50% of U.S. Catholics said that they knew the Church’s teaching that after the consecration, the bread and wine are totally changed into Jesus’ body and blood. Even among that 50% of those who were aware of the Church’s teaching, a third said that they still regarded the Eucharist as a symbol, leaving only 31% who actually believe the Church’s teaching that the Eucharist actually is Jesus. What can we do about it? We talk with Fr Roger Landry, who recently celebrated his 10,000th Mass.

    • Plan of Life: Habits to Help You Grow Closer to God

There is no better time to change your life than to change it right now, says Father Roger J. Landry, and Plan of Life is the guide you'll need. Landry discusses how people form habits, and how in particular you can form holy habits, habits that will bring you closer to Jesus. It represents a "treasure chest" of practices to help you grow happier, holier, and closer to God every day. Using passages and descriptions from the Bible, Landry first introduces you to the Holy Spirit, who will be your guide and companion throughout the book. He then introduces ways that this book will jumpstart your life through the six pillars of holiness training advocated by Saint John Paul II: grace, prayer, Sunday Mass, Confession, listening to the Word of God, and proclaiming that Word. This book is meant for teens to older adults of all educational levels who aspire to spiritual growth; it's also a great aid for parents and grandparents who need help in teaching children and young people how to grow in God. There are many Catholics who are not familiar with having a plan of life that includes these basic elements. Many Catholics would like to grow spiritually, but don't know where to start and welcome this kind of practical, doable approach: this is what they've been looking for! (learn more)

    • Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko: Truth Versus Totalitarianism

Listen, Father Jerzy, today is September 14, your birthday. So if you are supposed to do something, this is the day!" So prayed Father Bernard Brien beside the bed of a dying man. As soon as the priest left the hospital room, the comatose patient opened his eyes and asked his wife what had happened. A few days later his medical team, after many tests, observed that his widespread cancer had completely disappeared. The doctors were astounded. The miracle moved Father Brien to write this book about Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko, to make the twentieth-century martyr better known. He presents an intimate portrait of the courageous Polish priest who changed his life and that of countless others. As the young and ardent chaplain of the Solidarity labor union, Father Popieluszko embodied the Polish people's resistance to Communism, and for this he was murdered in 1984, at the age of thirty-seven, by the Communist regime's security forces. Soon afterward Father Popieluszko was hailed as a martyr and a national hero, and his example inspired the Polish people to persevere in their struggle for political and religious freedom. Father Popieluszko's witness of spiritual resistance, deeply rooted in the life of Christ, retains its relevance and urgency in the twenty-first century. The young Polish priest who stood up to Communist totalitarianism at the cost of his life will embolden those who resist tyranny and defend human dignity. (learn more)
