+  False Charges Thwart Peaceful Sidewalk Counselor’s Free Speech Rights

  • Description: "The Chicago-based Thomas More Society filed a brief in Detroit, appealing a personal protective order (PPO) requiring a peaceful sidewalk counselor, Chris Coatney, to stay at least 500 feet away from a Detroit abortion clinic. Mr. Coatney bears witness to the sanctity of life outside the abortion clinic and speaks with abortion-bound women and couples in an effort to save their babies. The order was entered after Denise Burrell, the manager of Summit Women’s Center, an abortion clinic on Six Mile Road in Detroit’s inner city, claimed that Coatney’s speech was threatening and that she was afraid of him, despite video evidence showing Ms. Burrell and her allies actually threatening and abusing Mr. Coatney."
