Kresta in the Afternoon – September 10, 2021 – Hour 1

We commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by looking back at programming from that week.

Kresta Comments: A Day that Changed History

The Cross at Ground Zero

If you search the internet, you will find millions of pictures of the terrorist attacks and the ensuing days of cleanup. But few are as enduring as the “Cross at Ground Zero,” a formation of steel beams found in the rubble of the World Trade Center. We look back on a conversation with Fr Benedict Groeschel, who was living and working in New York at the time of the attacks.

Benedict Groeschel was a Franciscan friar who hosted the Sunday Night Prime program on EWTN. He co-founded the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and the Office of Spiritual Development for the Archdiocese of New York. He was also a professor of pastoral psychology at St Joseph’s Seminary in New York and was close friends with Mother Teresa, Mother Angelica, and Alice von Hildebrand. He died in 2014 at the age of 81.

How 9/11 Changed Warfare

As events unfolded on September 11, US intelligence worked frantically to figure out who was responsible. They soon understood it was the work of Islamic Terrorism. But this presented a new challenge. The enemy was not the kind of foreign power we fought in the World Wars. It was not even an organization like Black September. And that meant developing new strategies. We look back on a 2001 conversation with Geoffrey Wawro.

Geoffrey Wawro is Professor of Military History at the University of North Texas, where he directs the UNT Military History Center. He hosted Hardcover History on the History Channel at the time of the attacks.
