Fr. Donald Haggerty introduces us to the contemplative life

Gertrude the Great: The Bride of Christ

Gertrude the Great, also known as Gertrude of Helfta, was one of the great mystics of the 13th century. She practiced a spiritualty called “nuptial mysticism” in which she came to see herself as a Bride of Christ and had a deeply personal union with Jesus and his Sacred Heart. Yesterday was her feast, and we talk about her with Rachel Fulton Brown.

Rachel Fulton Brown is associate professor of history at the University of Chicago. She specializes in medieval European religions, the liturgy and prayer, and devotion to the Blessed Mother. Check out her blog at fencingbearatprayer.blogspot.com

A Blueprint for the Contemplative Life

Despite signs of a crisis in the Church, there are many great things going on. Lay Catholics are expressing new interests in intense forms of prayer and the spiritual life, including contemplative prayer. Fr Donald Haggerty has developed a blueprint for this type of prayer life and he joins us.

Fr. Donald Haggerty is a priest of the Archdiocese of New York serving at St Patrick's Cathedral. He's the author of several books, most recently Saint John of the Cross: Master of Contemplation. His other books include Contemplative Enigmas: Insights and Aid on the Path to Deeper Prayer.
