Why Understanding America’s Religious Past is Essential for its Religious Future (full hour)

Some people think America was founded as an explicitly Christian nation by devout Christian thinkers. Others say it was founded as a secular democracy. Philip Gorski disagrees with both and says what the Founding Fathers actually envisioned was a republic that weaved together the ethical vision of Hebrew prophets with the Western political heritage of civic republicanism. A lack of understanding of these principles is one of the largest contributing factors to today’s division, where “purple” counties are increasingly harder to find. We’ll talk with Philip about the history of American civil religion and what it means for the future.
