Finnish Prosecutor Continues to Claim “Hate Speech”

In 2019, Dr. Päivi Räsänen was accused of “hate speech” for Tweets she posted referencing the Biblical definition of marriage. In late March, a three-judge panel for the Helsinki District Court unanimously dismissed the charges against her, but now the Finnish proescutor has appealed the ruling and intends to take the matter to the Finnish Supreme Court if necessary. Counsel Lorcan Price joins us.

Charles de Foucauld – simple Preacher, or Empire-builder?

This weekend, the Church will canonize Blessed Charles de Foucauld, a missionary who served in French Algeria in the early 20th Century until he was killed by bandits. Critics of French Colonialism say Blessed Charles was not some simple preacher, but was a colonialist and empire-builder. What should we know about his life? We talk with David Pinault.

David Pinault is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University. His research interests include comparative Christology and the status of Christian populations in Muslim-majority societies and he has done fieldwork in Yemen, Egyptm Pakistan, India, and Indonesia. He wrote the preface to Jean-Jacques Antier’s biography of Charles de Foucauld and is the author of The Crucifix on Mecca’s Front Porch: A Christian’s Companion for the Study of Islam.
