The atonement has become a problematic category in contemporary theology because it seems to presume that the forgiveness of sins requires the suffering of the sinner or someone who represents him or her. In its most severe expression, God the Father sends his Son to his death on the cross in order to satisfy the infinite punishment that justice demands. Gary Anderson joins us with more.

Dr. Gary Anderson is the author most recently of That I May Dwell among Them: Incarnation and Atonement in the Tabernacle Narrative. He’s Hesburgh Professor of Catholic Thought at the University of Notre Dame, and his primary fields of study include Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity. His other books include “Sin: A History” and “Charity: The Place of the Poor in the Biblical Tradition.”
