Cardinal George Pell died of a heart attack last night at age 81. We revisit our conversation with him about his time in prison and his thoughts on the state of the Church.

 

Revisiting a Conversation with Cardinal Pell

Last night, we were shocked to hear the news of the death of Cardinal George Pell, who suffered a heart attack following hip surgery. He was a champion of orthodoxy in the modern Church, but tragically had to spend more than 400 days in prison following a false conviction of sex abuse. During that time he wrote extensive reflections on his experience, and he joined us to talk about it in May 2021. We revisit that conversation today

Cardinal Pell on What He Learned From His Time In Prison: ‘The Christian Package Works’

George Cardinal Pell, formerly Archbishop of Sydney (2001 2014) and of Melbourne (1996 2001), Australia, was appointed in 2014 by Pope Francis as Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy at the Vatican. He also served on Pope Francis’ Council of Cardinals. Cardinal Pell received a Licentiate of Sacred Theology from the Urbanianum University in Rome, and his DPhil in Theology from the University of Oxford. He detailed his time in prison in a 3-part series of journals published by Ignatius Press. His other books included Test Everything and Issues of Faith and Morals. He died of a heart attack following hip replacement surgery on January 10, 2023 at the age of 81.
