Kresta in the Afternoon – August 15, 2022 – Hour 1

On this Feast of the Assumption, Al asks if the Scriptures emphasize Mary and Michael Pakaluk finds the voice of Mary in the Gospel of John.

Kresta Comments: Do the Scriptures Emphasize Mary?

Marian devotion plays a special role in Catholic life. She appears in countless works of art, is the subject of hundreds of books, and is a central character in Mel Gibson’s film The Passion. But the Scriptures don’t often mention her. Do we overemphasize Mary? Al discusses.

Finding Mary in the Gospel of John

The gospel of John has been recognized as unique from the other Synoptic Gospels – but why? Michael Pakaluk looks for the answer by examining the subtle but powerful influence of our Blessed Mother within John’s Gospel, drawing out the deeper meaning of what happened when the beloved disciple took her into his home.

Michael Pakaluk is the author most recently of Mary’s Voice in the Gospel According to John: A New Translation with Commentary. He is a professor of ethics and social philosophy in the Busch School of Business at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas. His previous books include Other Selves: Philosophers on Friendship, The Appalling Strangeness of the Mercy of God, and most recently The Memoirs of St. Peter: A New Translation of the Gospel according to Mark.
