Sunday Vespers during Great Lent is a service that includes readings, prayers, and hymns that focus on God’s plan of salvation.
Readings
Readings from the Old Testament, such as Genesis, Exodus, Proverbs, and Job
Psalms, such as Psalm 103, a hymn of praise and gratitude for creation
Prayers
Intercessory prayers for the needs of others
Prayers for safety during the night, and for deliverance from sin
Hymns
Variable hymns that recall the events of the life of Christ and of the saints
A short, but solemn Lenten hymn, such as Preterpivyj: Having Suffered
Liturgical symbols:
The use of light (candles), bells, incense, icons
Bowing (rather than genuflecting)
Making the sign of the cross at each pronouncement of the Holy Trinity
Theme: The theme of the Vespers service is to take the faithful on a journey through salvation history, from the creation of the world to the fulfillment of salvation through Christ’s sacrifice.
