The Meaning of Fatima After 100 Years

October 13, 2016 @ 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

free will donation

Beginning in 1916, an angel appeared three times to three shepherd children near their home in Aljustrel, Portugal. These angelic apparitions prepared the three children, Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco, for a series of apparitions of the Blessed Mother from May 13 to October 13, 1917, at a cove in the nearby village of Fatima. This talk will provide an overview of the content of the Fatima apparitions; the great “miracle of the sun” of October 13, 1917; the Church’s investigation and approval of the apparitions; and the three parts of the “secret of Fatima.” There will be discussion of the main themes of Fatima: the importance of prayer (especially the Rosary), penance, the Eucharist, and reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. There will also be consideration of the role of the Fatima messages in world history; the May 13, 1981, assassination attempt on the life of St. John Paul II; the March 25, 1984, consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary; and the subsequent fall of the Soviet Union. The talk will reflect on the significance of the Fatima apparitions for us today and why Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) referred to Fatima as the most prophetic of the Marian apparitions.
Dr. Robert L. Fastiggi will be the guest speaker at this Heart to Heart Catholic Women’s Apostolate event. Dr. Fastiggi is the Professor of Systematic Theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. In addition to his own publications, he served as the co-editor of the English translation of the 43rd edition of the Denzinger-Hunermann “Compendium of Creeds, Definitions, and Declarations on Matters of Faith and Morals” (Ignatius Press, 2012) and the executive editor of the 2009-2013 supplements to the “New Catholic Encyclopedia” (Gale Cengage Learning in cooperation with the Catholic University of America). Dr. Fastiggi is a member of the Society for Catholic Liturgy, the Academy of Catholic Theology, and the Mariological Society of America, for which he served as president from 2014-2016.
