Segment 1

Fr. Matthew Kurt talks about becoming a priest.

My name is Father Matthew Kurt.  I am twenty-eight years old.  I grew up in Canton, MI with a loving and encouraging family that consists of my mom (Kris), my dad (Dan), and two younger brothers (Andrew and Stephen).  My family and I have been parishioners at St. Thomas a’ Becket since 2000 and my brothers and I were altar servers here when we were younger. I graduated from Salem High School in 2014 and from Michigan State University in May 2018 (Go Green!) with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in political theory and constitutional democracy.  I commissioned as an officer in the United States Army from MSU Reserved Officer Training Corps (ROTC) in May 2018 as well.  Currently, I am a first lieutenant and a chaplain candidate in the 983rd Engineering Battalion out of Toledo, OH.  In my free time I enjoy playing ultimate Frisbee, disc golf, and Spikeball. Right after graduating from Michigan State, I entered Sacred Heart Major Seminary and I just graduated from there last month.  I was ordained a deacon last year and I was ordained a priest on May 18!  As a priest, what I am looking forward to the most is celebrating Mass, hearing confessions, and spreading the joy that comes from following Jesus Christ.  I have been assigned to St. Fabian in Farmington Hills for the next three years and after that, I will go on active duty as an Army chaplain.  I want to thank everyone at St. Thomas a’ Becket for all your prayers and support throughout my whole life, but especially these last few years.  Please continue to pray for me and know that I am praying for all of you!
