At the opening Mass for the Amazon synod Sunday, Pope Francis prayed that the Holy Spirit would give the bishops prudence, wisdom and discernment to help the Church in the Pan-Amazonian region be renewed by the fire of faith. Matthew Bunson reports from Rome.

Protests in Hong Kong intensified this weekend after Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam used “emergency powers” to ban face masks at public gatherings. Demonstrators have begun targeting train stations and other facilities and the unrest has also spread to the mainland. Timothy McLaughlin is there and he has the latest.
5:00 – Brooklyn’s Bishop DiMarzio Leads Vatican Investigation of Buffalo
The Holy See has announced that Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn will lead an Apostolic Visitation of the Diocese of Buffalo. The visit is “non-judicial and non-administrative,” meaning no formal charges are currently being considered, and has not been ordered under the provisions of Vox Estis Lux Mundi outlined by Pope Francis this summer.
