On May 18, 1565, the Siege of Malta began when the Ottoman Empire tried to invade the Island of Malta, which was held by the Christian Knights Hospitaller. The Knights withstood the siege until September of that year and the victory became one of the most celebrated events in 16th-Century Europe and helped reverse the European perception of Ottoman invincibility.
