Talking about the “Things That Matter Most” on August 28, 2019

Guest hosts Bruce & Kris Mcgregor

4:00 – Federal Judge blocks Missouri’s eight-week abortion ban

A Federal judge has blocked a Missouri law that would have banned abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy. The law was scheduled to go into effect this week but was blocked by Judge Howard Sachs who said it conflicted with Supreme Court rulings that legislative limits cannot be measured by fetal development. We’ll talk about this and other abortion news with Michael New.

4:20 – Cardinal Pell to Appeal to Australian High Court

Cardinal George Pell will appeal his conviction to the Australian High Court, following the split decision last week by the Court of Appeal in Victoria to uphold his conviction for child sexual abuse. This is the Cardinal’s last legal avenue to overturn a conviction which has divided opinion in the country and internationally. We talk with Gerard Bradley about the legal process for the appeal.

4:40 Virginia Governor Appoints an Activist with a History of Anti-Catholic Tweets

On Aug. 16, democratic Gov. Ralph Northam appointed Gail Gordon Donegan to the Virginia Council on Women, an advisory group for the governor and the state’s General Assembly, which also awards educational scholarships. Gordon Donegan is a Democratic activist from the city of Alexandria, Virginia. She has a history of profane anti-Catholic tweets, including Christmas is the one time of year the Catholic Church is allowed to focus on a little boy.” and “Go tell a Catholic they have dirt on their forehead.” We’ll talk about it with Matthew Bunson and also look at the consecration of the first Chinese bishop after the Vatican-China deal.

5:00 – The Key to the Dreaded Ephesians’ Passage

You’ve been there, sitting uncomfortably in the pew, waiting for the lector to read the dreaded Ephesians passage, the one that speaks the culturally anathema, “Wives be subject to your husbands…” It’s a go-to passage for modern critics of Christianity and used to “prove” that Christianity subordinates women. This claim is, of course, preposterous and when the entire passage is understood the beauty of its teaching is revealed. We talk with Dr. Ben Wiker.

5:15 The Life of St Augustine

Today we celebrate the feast of St Augustine of Hippo, the great Doctor of the Church. We look at his life and his theology of deification with Fr David Meconi.
