Talking about the “Things That Matter Most” on April 1, 2019
4:00 – The Matrix Revisited
Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the release of the first Matrix film. You may be wondering: so what? What does a sci-fi film have to do with Catholicism? Turns out the film contains some surprising philosophical themes and became a launching point for discussion on matters of reality and existentialism. Steven Greydanus joins us.
4:20 – Heroes of the Cristero War
We typically think of Mexico as a strongly Catholic country, so it’s easy to overlook the periods of persecution the Church has faced there. One example is the Cristero War of the 1920s. Today marks the anniversary of the death of Blessed Analecto Flores, who was murdered in 1927. We talk with Msgr. James Murphy about him and other saints of the Cristero War.
5:00 – Empowered by the Holy Spirit, Facing the Challenges of the Day
We’re living through a time of crisis in the Church that is shaking the faith of many. At the same time, the wider culture is bolder and more aggressive than ever in its public opposition to the Judeo-Christian values that have been the foundation of our society. All the polls and social indicators are clear: we’re in the midst of a great social and cultural disruption and people feel it. Fear, confusion, anxiety, anger, and despair are on the rise. But we know that Jesus have given us all we need to take our place in this battle. That’s the focus of this year’s Renewal Ministries Gathering. We get a preview from Ralph Martin.
5:20 – Confronting Old Testament Controversies
How do we handle the “difficult” passages we find in Scripture, especially the Old Testament? Many times we tend toward one of two extremes – we either ignore the passages entirely, or obsess over them so much that we miss anything else. Tremper Longman joins us to help cut through the confusion and find clarity.
