Talking about the “Things That Matter Most” on August 25, 2017

4:00 – Bolstered by Faith, Dr Omalu Fights for Truth

This weekend is the highly-anticipated boxing match between undefeated world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Mixed Martial Arts champ Conor McGregor. The Association of Ringside Physicians has expressed grave concern for McGregor’s safety, because he has no professional boxing experience, and believes the fight should not happen at all. It’s one more example of our national debate over the risk of high-contact sports. Dr. Bennet Omalu is back as we continue our discussion about the dangers of concussions and how his faith has helped his work.

5:00 – ISIS Genocide: Hostages, Forced “Marriage” and Targeted Clergy

Nowhere today does the term genocide apply more aptly than in Iraq and Syria, where Christians, Yazidis and other minorities have been devastated by targeted killings, hostage taking, rape and other atrocities beyond our imagination. For months now there has been no trace of Christianity in the land where it has thrived for millennia. As ISIS continues to lose territory, we’ll talk with Nina Shea about the present and future of Christianity in the region.

5:20 – Register Recap: Should Confederate Statues Be Removed + Archbishop Defends Amoris Laetitia

In the wake of the violence in Charlottesville there has been a major push to remove statues of Confederate generals and rename locations named for the Confederacy. Is there a defense for allowing these monuments to remain? What purpose do they serve? We’ll talk about it with Matthew Bunson as we look ahead to this weekend’s Register Radio. We’ll also discuss Archbishop Victor Fernandez, a close associate of Pope Francis who says the pope wants to discreetly change the Church’s pastoral practice on communion for divorced and remarried Catholics.
