Segment 1 – Intro & News
Segment 2 & 3 – Was the controversy over Humanae Vitae largely avoidable?
Fr. Atwood has concluded that “the controversy over Humanae Vitae was partly caused by the delay in presenting the teaching when new questions surrounding birth control arose.” He has written on this topic and joins us today.
Father Ray Atwood is a priest of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa. He serves Sacred Heart Parish in Oelwein and Immaculate Conception Parish in Fairbank. He attended the Josephinum College in Columbus, Ohio, and was ordained in 1994. He is the author of the two-volume Masters of Preaching and Precious in the Eyes of the Lord.
Segment 4 – Nuns lead charge against New York abortion mandate
“A diverse coalition of religious groups will be at the New York Court of Appeals today to continue their fight against the state’s abortion mandate. In Diocese of Albany v. Harris, a group of Anglican and Catholic nuns, Catholic dioceses, Christian churches and faith-based social ministries sued New York after it mandated they cover abortion in their employee health insurance plans in violation of their religious beliefs.” Daniel Blomberg talks about the case.
Daniel Blomberg is vice president and senior counsel for Becket. Before joining Becket, he clerked for Chief Judge Alice M. Batchelder of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and served as litigation counsel with the Alliance Defending Freedom. Daniel’s clients have included an international order of nuns, the world’s largest religious media organization, synagogues, members of the U.S. military, religious healthcare ministries, peaceful protestors, halfway houses, religious colleges, state legislators, homeless shelters, religious business owners, an art gallery, and churches.
