Cardinal McElroy will serve as Archbishop of Washington
The Vatican announced early Monday that Cardinal Robert McElroy of San Diego has been appointed to succeed Cardinal Wilton Gregory as Archbishop of Washington, DC. McElroy has been vocal on a number of controversial issues at the intersection of politics and Church life and is considered by many to be the U.S. cardinal whose thinking most aligns with Pope Francis. Matthew Bunson has more.
