Ave Maria in the Afternoon – August 30, 2024 – Hour 2

Robert Corzine unpacks Jesus’ faceoff with the Pharisees in this Sunday’s Gospel and John Agresto discusses the death of learning.

``Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?``

In this Sunday’s Gospel, the Pharisees try to trap Jesus by asking why his followers have broken with tradition and are eating with unclean hands. Rob Corzine joins us with a look at how Jesus responds.

Robert Corzine is Vice President of Academic Programs for the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. He was received into the Catholic Church in 1994 and has held teaching and advocacy positions for several Catholic apostolates, including work as an apologist and catechetical writer for Catholics United for the Faith and as producer and host of a weekly Catholic radio program on apologetics and evangelization. Host of EWTN’s Genesis to Jesus with Dr. Scott Hahn, Rob holds a degree in Humanities and Catholic Culture from Franciscan University.

The Death of Learning

The liberal arts are dying. They are dying because most Americans don’t see the point of them. Americans don’t understand why anyone would study literature or history or the classics when they can get an engineering or business degree. And in a related problem, the very idea of “Western civilization” has become a term of reproach at so many supposedly thoughtful institutions. What can be done? John Agresto joins us.

John Agresto is the author of The Death of Learning: How American Education Has Failed Our Students and What to Do about It. He has taught at several institutions including the University of Toronto and Duke University and was president of St. John’s College in Santa Fe for 11 years.
