March 5, 2013

The College of Cardinals, meeting today for the 2nd day of the sede vacante period, have not yet set a date for their conclave to select a new Pope.

Briefing reporters after the morning meeting, Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, said that the cardinals were evidently in “no rush” to proceed with the conclave. He pointed out that the cardinals’ congregation had chosen not to hold meeting on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, suggesting that this decision underlined their intention to proceed deliberately.

During the daily congregations, cardinals have spoken about the needs of the Continue Reading

Looking Forward and Looking Backward

Kresta Commentary

February 12, 2013

By Al Kresta

If you had asked me two months ago if Benedict XVI would be the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years, I would have said, I wouldn’t be at all surprised. After all, in July 2010 he had told an interviewer Peter Seewald that a pope could resign. Maybe he was setting expectations. Benedict had never grasped for power or position and would be one of the few people willing to relinquish power voluntarily.

But when I got a phone call early Monday morning that Benedict had indeed resigned I was surprised, stunned. The first thing to strike me about his resignation is that it came too soon. In the providence of God, I knew otherwise, but, from my Continue Reading

Catholic Witness in a Nation Divided: Build the Church, Bless the Nation

al_kresta-125x130

December 30, 2012

“Our problem isn’t in Washington; it’s in our parishes. Only if we first build the Church can we, will we, bless the nation.”

–Al Kresta

Al Kresta, host of the popular “Kresta in the Afternoon” broadcast on Catholic radio and President and CEO of Ave Maria Communications, is talking about the Catholic vote in the 2012 election. In November, according to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, forty percent of Mass-attending Catholics voted for President Obama, a self-identified champion of two intrinsic evils: (1) abortion, including partial-birth abortion; and (2) the redefinition of marriage.

Most elections don’t permit such black and white assessments. In this case, Continue Reading

Kresta Commentary

October 10, 2012

By Al Kresta

Dear co-laborers in the Lord,

I have an absolutely urgent request.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan has done an outstanding job leading the Catholic resistance to the HHS mandate. Archbishop of Archdiocese of New York, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, an advisor to Benedict XVI, he has a well-deserved reputation as a spiritual leader. He is blessed with a winsome personality, great sense of humor and an instinctive, Catholic drive to reach out even to Continue Reading
